"Croatoan" Recap
Those brotherly moments killed us! When Sam told Dean "I'm infected; just give me the gun, and I'll do it myself," we melted. That was the moment Sam became a real hunter for us.

A quick recap
Sam gets a vision of Dean shooting a groveling person in cold blood. Well, that can't be right. They head out to Rivergrove, Oregon, the town from the vision, which seems like a pleasant place. Then Sam notices the word "Croatoan" carved into a telephone pole, and things get creepy. See, way back when, one of the first British colonies in America disappeared, and the only remnant was that word carved on a tree. Spooky, no? Things get spookier when the guys realize there's no cell service and all the phones seem to be down. Yipe.

The guys go looking for the guy Sam saw in his vision. They find his house, but he's not there. His brother and father are, and they seem to be torturing his mother. The guys burst in to save her, the father goes nuts and runs at them with a knife, and Dean shoots him. The brother dives out a window and gets away. The guys take the injured mother and dead dad to the town doctor's office. Dean take off to get help, and Sam stays with doctor and patient.

Dean doesn't get far – he runs across a shot-out, abandoned car that features a blood-soaked baby seat and other evidence of violence. Several townsfolk, including the escaped brother, have blocked off the bridge, and they try to get Dean out of the Metallicar. Like that'll happen. Cue squealing tires, dangling aggressors and some rather nice stunt driving. Dean heads back into town, where he runs into Sarge, a heavily armed but uninfected townsperson. He's been seeing his neighbors go crazy, attacking and killing each other in horrible ways. After a standoff and a tense drive, during which Dean and Sarge train their guns on each other the whole way, they go back to the doctor's office, where they discover the wife went nuts and tried to attack the doctor. She insists she's fine, but Dean and Sarge don't believe her. Sarge can't stomach executing a neighbor, so Dean does the deed.

Turns out everyone's been going nuts due to a demonic virus, one spread by blood-to-blood contact. The doctor can't test for it, because it doesn't show up in the blood until the infected person gets violent. Suddenly there's a pounding on the door. It's Duane, the original guy from Sam's vision. He's wounded, but he swears he hasn't been infected. Sam argues that they can't just execute him until they know whether or not he's really a threat, but Dean is unmoved. He locks Sam in a room and prepares to kill Duane – but backs down at the last minute. After four hours, Duane still hasn't shown signs of infection, so he really was an innocent. The same can't be said for the nurse at the clinic, who corners Sam, then goes nuts. She cuts him and smears her blood into the wound. Sam's been infected.

Sarge wants to execute Sam immediately, but Dean refuses. Sam tells Dean to just give him a gun so he can kill himself, but again, Dean refuses. Instead, he gives Sarge, Duane and the doctor the keys to the Metallicar and tells them to make a run for it. Sam begs him to leave with them, but Dean's not going anywhere. "Dean, you could keep going!" Sam insists. "Who says I want to?" Dean replies. "I'm tired, Sam. I'm tired of this job, this life, this weight on my shoulders, I'm tired of it." Before he can tell Sam why he so tired, the doctor reappears – the town is deserted. Everyone has disappeared, just like in Roanoke hundreds of years ago.

There's more: Sam's blood is clean. Somehow, he avoided infection, even with direct contact. Sarge and Duane decide to get out of town, while the doctor stays to try to tell the authorities what happened. Duane asks Sarge to pull over – he's got to make a call. Just like Meg, he's talking about the blood-chalice phone. He slits Sarge's throat and talks to the yellow-eyed demon, telling it that just like they suspected, Sam was immune.

Sam tries to get Dean to talk about why he was willing to die, but Dean tries to change the subject – maybe they should quit hunting for a while and just go visit the Grand Canyon? Now Sam knows something's wrong – why won't Dean share the weight he's been carrying. Dean says he can't – he promised John before he died that he's keep a secret – a secret about Sam. What is it? Sam asks. The screen goes black. Dammit!

What’s your opinion about this episode?
Oooh, the slow-building tension had me on the edge of my seat.
I agree with the “slow” part, but I didn’t get the “tension” part.
Where were the explosions? I wanted zombie riots and explosions!
The horror plot was just a sideshow – it was all about the brothers, and that was fantastic!

The cutaway ending was:
Perfect! I’ll be salivating for the answer until the next new episode.
Frustrating! You’ve done it before, Kripke, so the surprise factor is gone.
Mean! You’re teasing us and then not following through!
No big deal. We’ll figure out the secret eventually, and you didn’t really believe they were going to spill tonight, did you?

Most shocking part of the episode:
Dean executing Mrs. Tanner
Sam getting attacked and infected
Sam offering to kill himself so Dean didn’t have to
Duane killing Sarge
The cut to black before Dean could spill the big secret
